The Green Development Forum of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Countries was held in Qingdao, East China's Shandong province, on July 8.

Shen Yueyue, vice-chairperson of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and president of the Good-Neighborliness, Friendship and Cooperation Commission of the SCO, read out a congratulatory letter from Chinese President Xi Jinping to the forum and delivered a keynote speech.

Shen noted that President Xi's letter shows his high regard for the solidarity, cooperation and mutual learning among SCO countries. The letter also offers Chinese wisdom in deepening exchanges and cooperation in the field of green development within the SCO and promoting sustainable development, Shen said.

The forum was the first high-level event hosted by China since it took over the rotating presidency of the SCO, she noted.

Efforts should be made to implement the consensus reached by the heads of state attending the SCO Astana Summit, upholding the "Shanghai Spirit" and people-centered development, and enhancing ecological well-being, according to Shen. Ecological progress and multilateralism should be upheld to boost green development momentum and foster collective green development efforts, and commitment to opening up and cooperation should be followed through to facilitate sharing of the fruits of green development, so as to build a closer SCO community with a shared future, she noted.
